First, Stay calm. Second,  Depending on the case, we may need to focus on stopping the bleeding and protecting the injured or infected tooth area, so please follow the next area of instructions detailed below.

  • Never take aspirin or ibuprofen- These are anticoagulants which will believe it or not increase or cause excessive bleeding. You will need to take acetaminophen (Tylenol) to alleviate the pain.
  • Severe toothaches or pain
    • The most common causes of severe tooth pain or aches are debris which is lodged under the gum line, a lost filling or broken crown or an infection.  If the problem is too painful to last the night call our 24-hour emergency services dispatch line at 616-399-0288.  Only a thorough exam by Piero can determine the underlying cause.
  • A knocked-out tooth
    • First Rinse your mouth out with warm water to cleans the area.
    • Apply gauze and use firm pressure to try and stop the bleeding.
    • When the bleeding stops, then apply a cold washcloth to the infected area to minimize swelling then either go to the emergency room or call our dental office.
    • If you are an adult you only have about a 1-2 hour window in which your tooth has a chance for to be re-implanted so be sure to call Piero at 616-399-0288 IMMEDIATELY to see if this is a dental emergency option.  Don’t forget to bring the tooth with you.
  • A chipped or broken tooth
    • Try saving the tooth’s pieces and rinse the pieces and your mouth (warm water)
    • Then place the pieces in a small cup and cover them with some milk or water and then if you can add a pinch of salt.
    • It just might be possible to reattach the pieces to your tooth – Only Piero will know for sure. Remember to take the pieces with you.
  • A lost dental restoration, such as a lost filling or crown
    • Call our office during normal operating hours.  You can temporarily relieve this pain by using clove oil (over the counter) . Just dip a cotton swab in the clove oil and apply it to the part of the tooth exposed to air.  Then put an ice pack on your face and that may also relieve some of the pain.

      • Save the filling if you found it and put it in a plastic bag and take it bring it to our dental office.
      • If you want your tooth to be more comfortable- fill the hole in your tooth with tooth wax or tooth cement (available at pharmacies or supermarkets)

      • Save the crown, (if you have it) and you may temporarily replace it yourself until you can visit with Piero.
      • Gently clean any debris out of your crown first and then
      • apply denture adhesive, dental cement or toothpaste to the inside of your crown and then slip the crown back in place to protect the exposed tooth.
